I had never used a TIG welder before, so what better way to learn than making something useful. My first TIG welding project was to build a welding trolley. There are several key design requirements for the trolley.

  • hold the welder securely

  • the welder usually is angled up to facilitate access to the front control panel

  • it has to be able to carry a heavy gas bottle

  • needs to be easy to move once fully loaded

  • has lots of storage for accessories/consumables

  • a TIG plus Plasma requires cable/hose management

I used Trimble (formally Google) Sketchup, just to get all the correct angles and lengths for the inclined welder base. I knew the Argon gas bottle was heavy so I located it directly over the axle. I got the wheels from Bunnings, the gas bottle holder was from local engineering supplies and on special for $25 so just grabbed it rather than spending a heap of time building one. The aluminium handle is the leg of a broken camping seat. The hose holder I made from bending flat bar. All the other bits are from my scrap bin. I did not have any decent square tube for the mainframe, so the 40mm x 40mm was purchased from my local steel supplier.

TIG welding is a bit of an accessory sport, so there is plenty of places to store and get easy access for gas lenses, nozzles, tungstens and the foot control pedal. Also, the long lengths of filler rod are always on hand.
