Custom Screens

I was asked to make a metal screen to cover a gap created when a mezzanine floor was built. My client wanted something to remind her of Paddington Railway Station in London. After looking at a few reference photos, I used the art-deco arches as inspiration for the design I quickly sketched up on some photocopy paper. She loved the concept and said it was exactly what she wanted!

I then scaled up the sketch to the cutout sheet (approx 1100mm wide x 550mm high) just so the critical arch elements would match and used a string as a rudimentary compass. The rest of the design was hand-drawn.

The whole piece was then cut by hand using a plasma torch. It was great to make a one-off unique piece that my client adores.

My client loved the piece so much that I was commissioned to make a second screen. This time a vertical space in a stairway required filling. Rather than just copy a thin slice of the existing screen, it was easy just to draw another one using the same shapes but fitting the vertical panel.

I think the second screen was even better than the first one!
