current work
I hope to post my current sculptures on this page. I often take 4-6 weeks to complete a sculpture, so this is a way of keeping up to date with my latest work.
My Instagram account has a lot more work-in-progress updates:
Carrara Marble
I recently attended a workshop run in Bowral by master sculptor Usama Alnassar. He sculpts in a variety of media, but is best known for his work in Carrara marble. These famous marble quarries are in the backyard of his studio. I used a pointed chisel to cut a hole in the middle of my piece. I then used flat/clawed chisels to enlarge the hole & continue refining the form. In one pass, I used a cylindrical diamond tool in the angle grinder to smooth, but after that, it was all done by hand. The next passes were made with various diamond files & rasps, each finer than the previous, until I could use wet & dry abrasive sandpaper. I started at 60 grit, working up to a final wet pass with 2000 grade. I could not believe the highly polished finish & how smooth it was to the touch! The workshop was fabulous & I met some wonderful sculptors. It was a relaxed environment & Asama is a great teacher. Marble is certainly different to metal, but I feel inspired to create more marble pieces.
