Metal Artwork

I am really happy with these artworks. The background piece is HW350 (the equivalent of Corten steel) that rusts with a beautiful patina. Using my photos for reference, I have hand-drawn each flower and its leaves. Next, using a plasma torch I have then hand-cut the design. The design is a mix of large cut-out pieces but also subtle stencil line work as an infill pattern. The highlight is then individual pieces of stainless steel that are shaped. In the case of the Waratah, each of the sixty-seven individual flowerets has been cut out and then shaped using jewellery dapping hammers. I made a custom shaping stump using a die grinder to cut various shapes with a range of curves and depths.

The Banksia pods are all individually hand shaped with a ball pein hammer using the inverted base of a discarded gas bottle to get the rough curved shape. They have then been planished with a hand-held pneumatic hammer. The scruffy Banskia brush is curled stainless steel offcuts from the electric shearer.

Each piece is 1200mm x 1200mm (W x H). The Waratah is 30mm deep, the Banksia 60mm.
