Latitude/Longitude/Elevation sign

A fun project to create a stencil of latitude, longitude & elevation. The info is easy to get from Google Maps, but I also cross-referenced with my topo maps. Stencils traced & then hand cut using a plasma torch. The primary metal is HW350 which is an Australian equivalent of Corten steel. It will rust & create a lovely patina which then protects against further rusting. It is trendy steel as it looks great & is long-lasting in outdoor applications.

Since the sign was mounted on timber railings, the stencils were only going to have partial see-through visibility so I thought creating a box frame & stainless steel backing sheet would look funky.

I love the contrast of the rusty metal & shiny stainless steel.

Another great place marker would be to use “What3Words”. This application has mapped the entire world into 3m x 3m grid. Each grid is assigned a unique three-word code. This is a very precise location system and one that many emergency and service industries are using more and more. For more info see their website what3words.com
