Sculptures 2024

I am very excited about these sculptures. The Gumleaf Orb and Odin’s Eye were accepted into Mudgee Sculptures in the Garden.

Gum Leaf Orb

I have created a semi-spherical sculpture but have not attempted to make a complete sphere. All the leaves have been individually hand-drawn, hand-cut with the plasma, and then hand-curved before being welded together in a mosaic pattern. The 2.5mm weathering steel is relatively easy to curve once all the cut-outs are done. I made approximately an equal amount of leaves that were curved to the left and to the right to provide flexibility in fitting them together.

I liked the floating appearance so I mounted the sphere onto a slim pipe at eye level. The overall dimensions are 210x210x110cm (HWD)

Odin’s Eye

I was excited about the success of shaping the 2.5mm Weathering steel into a curve for the sphere. Even though it looks only slightly curved, the sphere pieces are amazing when the sphere starts to grow. For Odin’s Eye, I ambitiously decided to create a bowl structure. It was difficult to create tighter curves by hand-hammering, but I enjoyed the natural shapes that resulted. The supporting circles are made of weathering and stainless steel, and the eye pupil is solid stainless steel. It started as an experimental, conceptual piece and kept growing until I stopped adding and changing pieces.

The piece is complete with a weathering steel plinth. It measures approximately 140x60x25cm (HWD).
